Biography

Adel Sharif is a Professor of Water Engineering and Process Innovation and Founder Director of the Centre for Osmosis Research and Applications, (CORA) at Surrey University, UK. Prof. Sharif is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is the winner of the 2005 UK Royal Society Brian Mercer Senior Award for Innovation in Science and Technology. He is also the winner of the 2008 Science Business first pan-European Academic Enterprise Award in the category of Energy/Environment. In 2012 Prof. Sharif with the Surrey Water Team Surrey were awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Water Research in a reception at Buckingham Palace by The Queen and Prince Philip. Prof. Sharif founded CORA in 2003, the UN Year of Fresh Water. The Centre’s research activities in the area of osmosis science and applications have resulted in a number of inventions in the areas of desalination, water treatment, and renewable power generation, which are currently commercialised by Modern Water Plc with plants in Oman, India, China, Southern Europe and elsewhere. He was awarded the Institute of Chemical Engineers 2011 Innovation and Excellence award in the Water Supply and Management category, and a runner up for the UK Water Industry Research Impact Awards 2015. In 2016 his water work was showed at the House of Commons. Prof. Sharif is a founder of Modern Water plc, a London Exchange AIM Market listed company specialized in desalination and renewable power generation. He obtained his first degree in Chemical Engineering followed by MSc and PhD from Swansea University. His research interests are in desalination, water treatment, membrane separation, and renewable energy. He has over 150 publications; is an inventor and co-inventor of more than 30 inventions and has supervised over 20 PhD theses and more than 50 M.Sc dissertations.
